El
Modeno Gardens, Inc. started in 1958 as a specialty fern grower
in an area called El Modena which is now part of the City of Orange.
The Company soon began growing "color" in 1 gallon and
5 gallon containers to fill a niche in the market. In 1967 the Company
moved to a site on The Irvine Ranch in Irvine, California. This
facility still remains as the corporate headquarters with 90 acres
of greenhouses, shadehouses, and field production. Over the years
the Company has added six new growing grounds -- with a total of
six in California and one in Texas. In 1980, 145 acres in Hollister
were purchased and developed; in 1994 200 acres in Valley Center
were purchased and are still being developed; in 1997 a nursery
facility was acquired in Watsonville with both greenhouse and outdoor
growing space; in 2000 245 acres of open land was purchased in the
Lake Mathews area of Perris, and in 2003 locations were added in
both Imperial County and Tyler, Texas. The Company employs over
700 people on a year-round basis to support its operations.
Within the industry, El Modeno Gardens, Inc. is recognized as a
leader in product development. Several introductions into the marketplace
can be directly attributed to the efforts of El Modeno Gardens,
Inc. The foremost example is the Euryops 'elmo elite' 'GreenGold'®.
Another significant introduction is the Gerbera jamesonii 'Jaunty'®.
This Transvaal Daisy was bred by staff at El Modeno Gardens, Inc.
and is intended to be used as a landscape plant, with blooms that
make excellent cutflowers in the home.
As El Modeno Gardens, Inc. expanded over the years many product
lines have been added. Today, the product mix includes: annuals,
perennials, flowering shrubs and vines for landscape use, holiday
crops such as Poinsettias and Living Christmas Trees, a wide assortment
of garden ferns and many patented items grown exclusively by El
Modeno Gardens, Inc. These patented plants include such items as
the groundcover rose ‘Flower Carpet’® Coral, the fifth

To achieve success in growing high quality plants and balancing
that with the needs of it's community, the Company always uses best
management practices in its growing cycle. As one of the few large
wholesale nursery operations in the United States that is still
family owned and operated, the management team takes pride in producing
plants that beautify your environment, that are also grown using
good
environmental management
practices.
